FWB is a relationship stage, not destination. Friends with benefits engage in intimate acts, enjoy physical contact, touch, taste, and pleasure. But it isn’t all free fun. Both must balance on the same tight rope, over the same rocky ravine. One step back, and you’re fuck buddies. One step forward, and the fairy dust of fate blinds one or both of you into wanting more. There is that watchful tension wondering who will go first and in what direction. That’s presuming someone else doesn’t stroll by or out of the past, and one of you leaps off the tight rope, whipping the other off balance and leaving them clinging for dear life. With both hands.
